Location

The 14th European Biomass Conference and Exhibition, will be held 17th-21st October 2005 at the Palais des Congrès in Paris (www.palaisdescongres-paris.com)

Le Palais des Congrès at metrò stop Porte Maillot (metro line 1) fulfils your every expectations. Just a stone’s throw from the famous Champs-Elysées, the Palais des Congrès can be easily reached from the city centre by public means. For those who plan to arrive by car, the centres’ underground provides a car park with 1.800 parking spaces.


Travel Information

ARRIVING BY PLANE
Travelling to Paris could not be easier. There are excellent air connections from around the globe. The two airports “Roissy – Charles de Gaulle” and “Orly West” with 151 air companies and 360 flight links, connect over 70 national cities and 506 cities worldwide, making Paris to one of the leading networks in Continental Europe.

The easiest transport link from the Airports to the Palais des Congrès

Roissy Charles de Gaulle Airport is the largest airport serving Paris. It is located 23 kilometres north east of Paris near the village of Roissy-en-France. The airport has two major terminals, CDG1 and CDG2, the second of which is split into terminals CDG2A to CDG2F.

The Air France Bus line 2 departs between 5:45 and 23:00 every 10-15 minutes and travels direct line to the Palais des Congrès (station Porte Maillot). The bus stop is located in Boulevard Gouvion St-Cyr (opposite to the Hotel Meridien).

An RER/TGV train (terminal CDG2) to downtown leaves every 15 minutes during 5.00 and 0.30. One possibility to get to the Palais des Congrès is to take the RER B (direction Robinson/Saint-Rèmy-Les-Chevreuse), to change at Chatelet-Les Halles to the metro line 1 (direction la Défense) and exit at Porte Maillot.

Orly Airport is located 14 kilometres south of Paris near the town of Orly. It has two terminals referred to as Orly-Sud (Orly South) and Orly-Ouest (Orly West).

The Air France Bus departs between 6:00 and 23:00 every 10-15 minutes to the City Centre. Get off at station “Les Invalides” and change to REC C (direction Argenteuil/Pontoise) and exit at Neuilly-Porte Maillot.

Or take the OrlyVal to RER stop Anthony, change to RER B (direction Mitry-Claye/Charles de Gaulle), change at Chatelet-Les Halles to the metro line 1 (direction la Défense) and exit at Porte Maillot.


Transport links from Airports to the City Centre

Roissy Charles de Gaulle Airport
Arriving passengers can go downtown by bus, train or taxi.

Air France Buses: There are 2 bus lines to the city centre. Between 5:45 and 23:00 the line 2 departs every 10-15 minutes from Terminal 2 (A,B,C,D,F). It deposits passengers at Porte Maillot (Palais des Congrès) and place Charles de Gaulle/Etoile.

The bus line 4 departs from Terminal 2 (C, B,F). It leaves every 30 minutes between 7:00 and 09:30 and stops at Gare de Lyon and Gare Montparnasse.

Travel time takes about 40 minutes (line 2) - 50 min. (line 4) if traffic is clear – during rush hours it could take an hour or more. There is also a direct bus line to Orly Airport. Tickets are sold on board.

The Roissy Bus (RATP) departs from 06:00 to 23:00 every 15-20 min. between Roissy Terminal 2 (A,C,F,D,B), Terminal 1 and Place de l’Opéra. Average travel time is 50 minutes. Tickets are sold on board.

An RER/TGV Station (in terminal CDG2) now directly serves the airport. Between 5:00 and 0:30 trains (RER B) to downtown depart every 4 to 15 minutes. The travel time to Gare du Nord averages 35 minutes.


Orly Airport
Arriving passengers can go downtown by bus, train or taxi.

The air France Bus departs between 06:00 and 23:00 every 10 -15 minutes from Orly East and Orly South (departure Level) and deposits passengers at the stations “Les Invalides” and “Gare Montparnasse”. Travel time takes about 30 minutes. There is also a direct busline to Roissy Charles de Gaulle Airport.

The RATP OrlyBus service is available from Orly South (Gate H) or from Orly East (Level 1). It brings passengers to and from Denfert/Rochereau (Metro RER Station) and departs between 06:00 and 23:00 every 15-20 minutes. Expect about 25 minutes travel time.

The JetBus is a bus service which brings passengers to the metro station Villejuif/Louis Aragon. It departs from Orly South (Gate H) or Orly East (Gate C). Travel times are similar to those of the OrlyBus service.

The Orly Rail-Shuttle Bus departs every 15 minutes between 6:00 and 23:00 from Orly South (gate H and I) and from Orly East (Level 0, Gate F) and deposits passengers at the RER C2 Station Pont de Rungis /Aéroport d’Orly. Travel time to the city centre takes about 25 minutes.

The OrlyVal is a frequent connection from Orly South (Gate K) and Orly East (Gate W, Gate J). There you have to change to the RER train Line B direction downtown. Expect an average travel time of 40-45 minutes.

The average driving time in a taxi is about 45 minutes depending on the traffic.

ARRIVING
BY TRAIN
Paris is a very important railway junction of France and of Europe. The 5 international railway stations are all operated by the SNCF (Société Nationale des Chemins de Fer Français):

Gare de Lyon (for trains from or to Southern France, Italy and Switzerland), Gare de l’Est (for trains from or to Eastern France, Southern Germany), Gare du Nord (for trains from or to the Netherlands, Belgium, Scandinavia and Northern Germany), Gare St. Lazare (mainly trains from or to England) and Gare Montparnasse (mainly trains from or to Bretagne).

All railway stations provide an excellent connection to the public transportation system (please refer also to the Information about “Bus and metro/RER” given below).

 

ARRIVING BY BUS AND METRO/RER

Tickets are sold at all major metro and RER stations, at the airport and at various tourist offices. A range of different tickets are available: single ticket, the cheaper Carnet (10 single tickets), day ticket (Mobilis), seven day ticket (carte Orange) and the Carte Paris Visite for one, two, three or five days including reduced entrance fee for a collection of museums.

October is high season in Paris, book your accommodation as soon as possible!

Practical Information
 

Banking Facilities and payment Methods
Banking hours are from Monday to Friday from 09:00 to 16:30 and on Saturday from 09:00 to 12:00. Some banks are closed between 12:00 and 14:00.

Exchange offices can be found at the airport, at all major railway stations and in some hotels and shops. A cash dispenser and an exchange office are also situated inside the Palais des Congrès.

For visitors from non EU-Countries it is advisable to carry along traveller cheques. Cash is best withdrawn at cash points. You will find cash dispensers inside the Palais des Congrès. Credit cards most frequently in use are Visa and Master-EuroCard.


Shopping
In general shops and markets are open from Monday to Saturday from 09:30 to 19:00. Please note that considerable variations are possible. Boutiques might be closed for one or two hours over noon. Markets and shops are often closed on Mondays.
In the heart of the Palais des Congrès you will find one of the biggest shopping centres in Paris offering a whole array of services: bank, bureau de change, post office, Air France agency, supermarket, newsagent, tobacconist, pharmacy and 100 boutiques (fashion, gifts..) to meet your needs.

Entertainment
The Pariscope and l’Officiel des Spectacles are the most common magazines on entertainment in Paris. Both provide a good overview on cultural events and restaurants. The latest issue is published on Wednesday and available at each kiosk.
FNAC-Agencies handle reservations of tickets for most events.

Telephone & Mobiles
A phone card is necessary for most of the public telephones in Paris. Cards are sold at post offices or at tobacco shops (tabacs).
In France mobile phones from European Countries do work without any problems. For mobile phones from overseas please ask your service provider.
High speed Internet Access (up to 45 Mbps), an Internet café and e-mail centres are also available at the Palais des Congrès.

Electricity
The standard voltage in France is 220Volt. The frequency is 50Hertz. Adapters are sold in department stores.
